Disclaimer: Just taking them out for a challenge. I don’t own them.

Summary: Improv challenge response. GS The lines provided were torture, but in a good way! I had to work at this one.

A/N: Thanks, Ann, for beta-ing for me.

“And I don’t even know what a sphincter is!”

Sara grimaced, and Grissom turned and glanced behind them at the elderly man who uttered the words, bitching at his no doubt embarrassed wife. “I don’t understand why the damn doctor ordered this test at all,” he went on, studying the forms he was filling out.

“I hate hospitals,” Sara sighed softly.

Grissom kept his eyes on the CNN newscaster talking on the television in the corner of the waiting room. “It’s the only lab with the right equipment,” he offered simply.

“Sara Sidle?” a voice sang from the administrative desk. Sara got up and swallowed a bundle of nerves that was welling in her throat. “I just need a copy of your insurance card,” the woman explained.

She made the copy and told Sara to have a seat. A tech would come get her in a few minutes. Grissom watched Sara saunter back to him and slump into the chair beside him.

“Problem?”

“No, they just needed my insurance card.”

He nodded and stared at the floor a minute. Sara’s knee began to bounce a little.

“Nervous?”

“No,” she replied immediately, a little defensively. Then she started chewing on her bottom lip.

“I don’t know,” she mumbled, watching a little girl play with a giant bead maze. “It’s not really nerves…it’s…” He took her hand, and she tried to relax.

It was not in the cards. This made for panic attack number seventy-three, thus far.

How did she get here? How would she get through this? Was this really happening? Her world was upside down now.

Grissom squeezed her hand gently. A man in a white lab coat came out a door on the other side of the room. “Sara Sidle?”

She stood up and took a step forward. Then she looked back at Grissom with her face all twisted incredulously. “Well, come on!” she said, putting out her hand and waiting for him to join her.

Sara lay down and arranged her clothing as instructed, while Jimmy the Radiologic Tech chatted up a storm. Grissom listened politely, but clearly wanted to get the show going.

Eventually, vital organs were identified and inspected. Measurements were taken. And then, the big moment arrived.

“So,” Jimmy said with a goofy grin, “Do we want to know?”

Grissom looked to Sara as if to double check. Sara gave a nod.

“Okay. I gotta ask, first. What does mom think?”

Mom?

She visibly shuddered for a second. Now was not the time to start panic attack number seventy-four. “Not that it means anything, but I think it’s a boy,” Sara replied, searching the screen for anything recognizable.

“And dad?”

“She’s usually right about everything else,” Grissom muttered self-deprecatingly, “So, I’ll go with her answer.”

Zeroing in on a particularly specific piece of anatomy, Jimmy frowned. Sara laughed and Grissom’s smile broadened.

“Well, thanks a lot, guys. I just realized that my entire job can be done by guessing.”

THE END.
